Neurocognitive Testing (AIB) Resource Guide

Our Neurocognitive Testing, in partnership with the American Institute of Balance (AIB), evaluates balance, dizziness, spatial awareness, and vestibular function in patients recovering from traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). AIB-certified testing is a gold standard in the field of vestibular and balance disorders, helping to identify impairments that affect daily activities, mobility, and cognitive function. This comprehensive assessment is critical for creating individualized treatment plans and providing objective clinical insight to guide care.

What the Patient Should Expect in Their Appointment:

A comprehensive 120-minute assessment using AIB’s evidence-based diagnostic protocols.
Testing may include videonystagmography (VNG) to assess inner ear and central motor function.
Computerized Dynamic Posturography (CDP) may be used to evaluate balance control.
Oculomotor and vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) testing may be performed to measure eye movement control.
Positional testing may be used to detect benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) or other vestibular dysfunctions.
Patients may experience mild dizziness or fatigue but will be monitored throughout the process.
Results are analyzed by specialists and used to tailor rehabilitation plans, which may include vestibular therapy, balance retraining, or further medical intervention.

Diagnostic, Treatment, or Both?

Diagnostic: Neurocognitive testing through AIB is designed to identify vestibular and cognitive impairments linked to TBI. While not a treatment itself, it is an essential tool for determining the next steps in the recovery process.

Average Recommended Testing Plan:

1

Initial comprehensive assessment to establish baseline vestibular and cognitive function.

2

Follow-up testing every 3-6 months to monitor progress and adjust treatment plans as necessary.

3

Testing frequency depends on severity of impairments and patient recovery progress.

Who Makes the Perfect Referral for This Service?

Patients with a history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) or concussion experiencing dizziness, balance disorders, or spatial disorientation.
Individuals struggling with motion sensitivity, unsteadiness, or frequent falls after a brain injury.
Patients who would benefit from comprehensive vestibular and balance assessment to guide treatment planning.
Patients experiencing visual disturbances related to head movement, affecting daily activities.

Additional Important Notes:

AIB-certified testing is often combined with vestibular therapy and neurocognitive rehabilitation to create a comprehensive recovery approach.
Patients are encouraged to follow individualized treatment recommendations based on test results for optimal recovery.
Test results provide detailed insight into vestibular and cognitive function to support clinical decision-making.
BPPV or other vestibular conditions may be diagnosed during testing, leading to targeted treatment interventions.
