CNS Vital Signs Resource Guide

CNS Vital Signs is a computerized neurocognitive assessment tool designed to objectively measure brain function following injury. It evaluates key cognitive domains such as memory, processing speed, attention, and executive function. This testing is especially valuable in identifying subtle cognitive impairments after traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) that may not be visible on standard imaging. The results help guide individualized treatment plans and provide clear, quantifiable data to support clinical care.

What the Patient Should Expect in Their Appointment:

A computerized, non-invasive cognitive assessment lasting approximately 30 minutes.
Patients will complete a series of standardized tasks on a computer that evaluate memory, attention, reaction time, and processing speed.
The test is user-friendly and does not require advanced computer skills.
Results are automatically scored and compared to age-matched norms.
A provider will review results with the patient and explain any areas of concern or impairment.

Diagnostic, Treatment, or Both?

Diagnostic: CNS Vital Signs is used to assess and quantify cognitive deficits. While it is not a treatment, it plays a critical role in guiding therapy recommendations and tracking recovery over time.

CNS Vital Signs does not replace cognitive therapy. Instead, it provides a baseline understanding of cognitive function and helps identify areas that would benefit from targeted cognitive therapy, which is still strongly recommended as part of the recovery process.

Average Recommended Testing Plan:

1

Initial baseline assessment following injury or onset of symptoms.

2

Follow-up testing every 3–6 months to monitor cognitive recovery and treatment effectiveness.

3

Additional testing may be recommended based on symptom progression or changes in clinical status.

Who Makes the Perfect Referral for This Service?

Patients recovering from a TBI or concussion experiencing memory issues, brain fog, or slowed thinking.
Individuals with attention difficulties, decreased processing speed, or executive function challenges after injury.
Patients who would benefit from objective cognitive assessment to better guide treatment planning.
Patients undergoing cognitive therapy who need measurable benchmarks to track progress.

Additional Important Notes:

CNS Vital Signs is often used alongside other assessments (such as eye tracking or vestibular testing) to provide a comprehensive picture of brain function.
Early identification of cognitive deficits allows for more targeted and effective rehabilitation strategies.
Cognitive impairments can significantly impact daily activities, work performance, and overall quality of life if left unaddressed.
Tracking cognitive changes over time helps ensure patients are progressing appropriately and receiving the right level of care.
